Erongo stretches from central Namibie to the western part of the country. This region is the ideal place to embark on a safari in the heart of the African savanna. Each part of the area has its own identity and paints a picture uniquely its own.

The landscape around the Erongo and Spitzkoppe mountains draws a savanna dotted with rocks, massive boulders, but above all incredible mountain formations. Sea and desert meet at Swakopmund, Sandwich Harbour and Walvis Bay. The sea of sand in Namib-Naukluft Park offers a magnificent tableau.

Hidden within each region are incredible wild animals of all kinds.

A Closer Look at Erongo

Situated on the western coast, Erongo is Namibie's fourteenth region. The area stretches across 63,539 km² from the central plateau westward. Its capital is the town of Swakopmund, founded on the coast, at the far west of the region.

Savanna and mountains dominate the central part of the region. Here you'll encounter the famous Erongo mountains, Spitzkoppe, and the Brandberg massif.

Swakopmund

The seaside resort of Swakopmund is the capital of Erongo. It sits at the far west of the region. Founded in 1892 by the Germans, the town's landscape blends colonial-era buildings, modern infrastructure, and the beach.

You'll discover museums, galleries, a marine park, and some historic buildings. Beyond exploring the town, you can relax on the beach, surf, skydive, or embark on a marine safari to spot dolphins.

By 4x4 or camel back, a desert safari offers wonderful opportunities to encounter local wildlife up close.

Erongo Mountain

The Erongo massif is located 155 kilometers northeast of Swakopmund, the region's capital. This mountain is nearly 130 million years old.

From a distance, the landscape depicts an African savanna with its steppes and trees. At the center of this scene stands the imposing mountain and massive granite blocks. Born from ancient lava flows, the shape of the rocks and the former magma chamber create the impression of witnessing a volcanic eruption frozen in time.

Erongo Mountain also hides historical and cultural treasures. Its caves often served as shelters for the Bushmen. On the walls, you can observe hunting scenes and rituals. The most famous are arguably those in Philip's Cave, especially the "White Elephant" chamber. It's equally worthwhile to visit Eemba Cave and Paula Cave.

You can expect to encounter several animals in the area. It's not uncommon to spot leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, elephants, rhinoceroses, mountain zebras, and springboks roaming the region. With your guide's help, you can fairly easily identify spectacular birds such as yellow-billed hornbills, lilac-breasted rollers, and red-and-black gonoleks.

Spitzkoppe

Approximately 150 kilometers east of Swakopmund and 50 kilometers west of Erongo Mountain, the Spitzkoppe mountain massif is part of the Damaraland region. Shaped like a pointed hat, orange in color, complete with natural pools and its famous Arch, Spitzkoppe is simply unique.

There is so much to discover in Erongo. The Brandberg massif features incredible rock engravings and boasts Namibie's highest peak. The Namib Desert and its spectacular sand dunes offer a thrilling experience. Cape Cross holds one of the country's most important historical markers and is a gathering place for thousands of seals.
