Mahango Game Reserve
On the western bank of the Okavango, Mahango Game Reserve combines floodplains and woodland across 25,400 hectares within Bwabwata National Park.
On the western bank of the Okavango, near Popa Falls, Mahango Game Reserve spans nearly 25,400 hectares of floodplains, riverine forests and woodland savanna. Officially known as Mahango Core Area, this zone is part of Bwabwata National Park, established in 2007. Less visited than Namibia's major reserves, it makes for a rewarding stop when traversing the Caprivi Strip between Divundu and the Botswana border.
Why visit Mahango Game Reserve
The park combines two ecosystems rarely found together in such a compact area: a wetland corridor along the Okavango, rich in water birds and large mammals, and dry woodland at higher elevation (500 to 1,000 m). This diversity explains the site's biological richness, with 869 recorded plant species, over 99 mammal species, 71 aquatic species and 5 amphibian species.
The reserve offers another advantage: it can be traversed in just a few hours, making it a logical stop for itineraries connecting Etosha to the Zambezi or Chobe National Park.
What to see and do
Land wildlife
Four of the big five are present: buffalo, elephants, leopards and lions. African elephants (Loxodonta africana) are frequently observed near the river during the dry season. The reserve also hosts the lechwe (Kobus leche), an antelope confined to wetland areas, as well as the African wild dog (Lycaon pictus pictus), a threatened species across the continent. Game densities remain lower than those in Etosha: patience and a local guide significantly enhance wildlife sightings.
Birdlife
Mahango is a premier birdwatching destination in Namibia. Wetland areas host the wattled crane (Bugeranus carunculatus), the pink-backed pelican (Pelecanus rufescens) and the African jacana (Microparra capensis). The riverbanks offer sightings of African skimmers and pratincoles.
Vegetation and landscapes
Flora is distributed between 62% grassland and 38% scrub. Riverine forests contain acacias, sclerocaryas and grewias. The floodplains shelter towering baobabs and Phoenix palms, which compose the park's most photographed landscapes.
When to visit
The dry season extends from April to November: vegetation thins out, wildlife concentrates around water points, and tracks are passable. This is the recommended period for viewing large mammals.
From November to April, the rainy season brings 80% of annual precipitation (550 to 600 mm total). Maximum temperatures hover around 30°C. This period is instead ideal for birdwatching safaris, with the arrival of migratory species and the splendor of breeding plumage.
