Katima Mulilo is a city situated on the banks of the Zambezi River. An ideal crossroads for travelers in Southern Africa, it sits between Namibia, Zambia, Angola, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, to the east of the Caprivi Strip. The city offers several accommodation options for visitors, including guesthouses and campsites. If you plan to venture into the lush vegetation of nearby national parks, you can easily stock up in the city.

History of Katima Mulilo

The city was built during a period when the Caprivi Strip was still blanketed in pristine forests. On January 28, 1935, it became the administrative center of the region, leading to the construction of a regional office. Erected beneath a giant baobab tree, now known as the toilet tree, this building was the only structure made of brick and mortar of its time. It was home to only a few inhabitants, who relied on sled paths to travel between villages.

It is the birthplace of two tribes living harmoniously: the Masubia and the Mafwe. On the city's coat of arms, they appear as two elephants facing each other, symbolizing the unity of peaceful coexistence between their chiefs. During apartheid, Nghweeze was the township for Black residents, while Katima Mulilo Proper was an area reserved exclusively for whites. These are the two oldest quarters of this Namibian city.
